Fine Art & Pottery
Biography
Stephenson's Art and Pottery is where fine art and
pottery become one.  I try to achieve a true fine art look
with my ideas.  I strive to create unique and original
ideas.  I don't want  viewed as just another crafter.  I
will give you a true unique experience. I specialize in
large raku vessels with wildlife scenes sculpted on
the bodies of the vessels.  I have sold art throughout
the USA  and around the world.  I have many private
collectors   I always love to hear comments about my
work.
History
I have been doing art for as long as I can
remember.  I graduated from Chadron State
College with a Bachelor of Science in Art
Education.  I now teach art and pottery for 1st
through 12th grades in a Public School.  I have
been doing this for 16 years.

I have also been pursueing my art career for the
past 20 years.   I have been painting wildlife for 22
years and creating pottery for 18 years.  My favorite
is to combine the mediums into one unified piece
of art.
Painting
I strive to capture wildlife in their natural habitat.  I
paint in acrylics and watercolor.  My college degree is
in the two dimensional emphasis.  My favorite
medium is watercolor.  I prefer anything in wildlife
and it's natural beauty.

Pottery
My pottery career began during my
junior year in college.I began sculpting
wildlife scenes on large vessels in
1994 and became aware of future
possibilities. I work in many techniques
and processes for finishing pottery
such as high fire, low fire and raku.  My
favorite is the raku process, which is
an ancient Japanese process used in
tea ceremonies. I also have a complete
line of dinnerware, which is microwave
and dishwasher safe.  I strive to make
each piece unique and one of a kind.

Raku
The Raku process entails mixing raw
chemicals for glazes which then are
applied to a fired piece of pottery.  The
piece then is fired in an outside kiln
with a weed burner and propane.  After
the piece reaches the proper
temperature to melt the glaze, the
burner is then shut down.  This piece
is removed from the kiln and placed in
a barrel of flammable materials such
as saw dust, straw, horse dung or
shredded newspapers.  When the
materials flame up, a lid is placed over
the barrel to suffocate the flame and
lock in the colors.  Many times pieces
will crack from the quick temperature
change, but that is simply part of the
raku process. Many cracks are quite
unique and no two are ever the same.
This reason is why I like the raku
process best.
